5 Tricks You Need to Know to Master the iPhone

The iPhone has been around for over a decade now, yet somehow it feels like it’s been around for even longer. It controls nearly every aspect of our lives, from work to social media, and as such, we’ve spent a lot of time with it. That amount of usage may make it seem like we know everything about the iPhone, when in fact, there are a few little-known tricks that could make using the phone infinitely easier.

I shuffled through my iPhone usage and found five tricks that I use on a daily basis and they make my life a lot easier. Keep in mind that some of these tricks may seem quite elementary, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t people out there who have no idea these tricks exist. Some of them will prove to be useful to you while others may not fancy your attention and that’s completely fine.

Here are five tricks you need to know to master the iPhone. I will make this video and share it to my cuckoo channel.

Email keyboard shortcut

You’ve probably heard of adding shortcuts through the keyboard, but never thought twice about actually using them. I definitely didn’t until I decided to take advantage of the trick because I was tired of typing in long email addresses. I use multiple email accounts on my phone and am constantly signing in and out.

With the keyboard shortcuts, instead of typing out the whole email address, it is now available to me through three short letters. I used the shortcut “gml” to write out my Gmail address and vice versa for other accounts. Now any time I need to fill out my email, I just type in the three-letter shortcut and save myself a lot of time.

To add keyboard shortcuts, go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement.

Control center customization

With iOS 11, Apple introduced the ability to add extra controls to Control Center. Previously, it only came with eight default options like the flashlight and camera that you couldn’t change, but now you actually can add as many as you want including some very useful ones.

Adding additional controls will purely vary on your preference. I added Wallet, Voice Memos and Apple TV remote among others. Instead of shuffling through folders to find these apps when I need to use them, I can just go to Control Center and access them quickly. To add these extra controls, go to Settings > Control Center > Customize Controls.

Password manager autofill

If you don’t use a password manager by now, I don’t know how you function. There are so many passwords to keep track of, it’s nearly impossible to remember them unless you are using the same password, which I highly warn against. However, the process of using a password manager in iOS 12 became even more convenient with the addition of password autofill.

Using a password manager like 1Password, you can turn on autofill and whenever you log into an account through an app or web browser, the password autofill function will instantly come up on the keyboard and autofill the password for you. It erases the annoyance of having to remember the password or jumping out of the app and into the password manager to retrieve the password.

To activate password autofill, go to Settings > Passwords & Accounts > Autofill Passwords and select your password manager of choice.
Swipe up to close apps

This one might seem like a no-brainer, but it’s actually changed recently and many users may not know of the new function. Before iOS 12, to close apps on an iPhone X (and now XS, XS Max and XR), you had to press and hold on an app in the multitasking menu until a little minus button appeared to let you close out apps.

Thankfully, Apple took away the needless extra step with its most recent update and now you can just begin swiping up to close out apps in the multitasking menu.

Siri Shortcuts

One of the major new features Apple introduced with iOS 12 is the Shortcuts app. We’ve talked about it before, and if you haven’t downloaded the Shortcut app and added some shortcuts, you definitely should. The shortcuts range from something simple like calculating the tip to something more complex like turning on your smart lights as soon as you get home.

Some of the shortcuts can get quite complicated, but just start small and you’ll be on your way to creating the right shortcuts that work best for you. Apple makes the process easier by suggesting multiple shortcuts.

iOS 12 problems persist today even though Apple's main intent with the update was to squash bugs and fix the problems we've all encountered over the last year.

You should update to iOS 12 and even consider testing out the new iOS 12 .1 beta. It'll fix a lot of your problems. However, it does come with some new baggage.

There are iPhone charging issues, and because iOS 12 is compatible with so many older iPhones and iPads, your bound to run into issues unique to just you.

Your iPhone XS won't charge

The iPhone XS and XS Max are not charging properly, according to some users, and it's spawned controversy in the last week – and its very own nickname: chargegate.

You may have experienced your iPhone not charger when it's plugged in and asleep when you put the Lightning cable into the phone. The temporary fix is to make sure you plug in your phone when it's lit and you hear the charging chime and see the visual charging cue.

This is likely an iOS 12 problem that can be fixed through a software update. But it's something Apple has yet to officially acknowledge. We'll update this section when we hear about a permanent solution to this problem.

Washed-out screens on iPhone X

Some owners of iPhone X devices have reported on Reddit, Twitter and forums that after upgrading to iOS 12, the colors on their screens look faded or "washed out." While this hasn't been universally experienced, it's unclear why this is happening at all – users have previously reported this issue going back to iOS 12 beta 1.

Reddit user Liamrc posted examples of default wallpapers set to 16-bit color that appeared vibrant in preview, but when set to the home or lock screen, reverted to 8-bit color and looked "desaturated." He allegedly asked Apple why and got a response from Craig Federighi, who said that the phone applies a filter to make text more legible.

Whether this is the true culprit is unclear, so we'll see if Apple has an official response soon. Some users have suggested turning off the Increase Contrast setting, which seems to have been turned on by default in iOS 12.

Increased battery drain

One of the most lauded iOS 12 features was better performance for older devices, but some users are reporting that post-update, their device batteries are draining abnormally quickly.

First, check your device battery's health to ensure that's not causing the drain. If the maximum capacity is below 85%, it may be time for a battery change. In this case, it's a hardware issue.

Second, if it's a software issue, this new iOS 12 problem might actually be caused by an old problem we've seen before in the last grand update to iOS 11. The internal reorganization temporarily taxes iOS devices and drains things faster.

Basically, when so much of the code is changed, parts of the internal storage directory are rearranged and it takes a bit more effort for the device to find apps and stored information. If this is the cause of the battery drain, fret not: it has historically only taken a couple days for phones to re-index themselves. If your device doesn't adjust soon, there's a potential fix originally cooked up to deal with the same issue occurring when updating to iOS 11: reset the device to factory settings, cleanly update to iOS 12, and then restore.

But if that doesn't work, you might try another, more drastic solution that users have suggested: reset the device to factory settings, but don't restore from iCloud or a backup, instead cleanly installing iOS 12 and manually downloading every app. (We said it was drastic!)

Other users are reporting erratic behavior with older devices, like irregular battery percentage jumps and showing different levels after rebooting the device. It's possible that this is a larger issue, so if you're still experiencing abnormal battery drain long after updating to iOS 12, let us know.

Apps not working well with iOS 12

You might find that after updating to iOS 12, some apps don't work as well as they used to. That's pretty normal, especially after leaping into a new full version of a mobile operating system, and apps generally release new versions that are compatible with the updated operating system. Simply go to the App Store and check to see if there's an updated version of the app.

Exactly when every app updates is, well, really up to them. Apps with smaller teams may take longer to release a new iOS 12-calibrated version. But old or abandoned apps may never be updated, which is, as the saying goes, the price of progress. This MacRumors forum post has a list of apps that may still have issues, though there's no guarantee it will be kept up to date. If you're having trouble with an app, go for the tried-and-true method of uninstalling and reinstalling it; but if problems persist, you might just have to wait for it to update.

Hotspot won't turn off

This may or may not prove to be a widespread issue, but it's one that a TechRadar editor saw personally. When directly connecting an iPhone 6S to a laptop that had previously used the phone as a hotspot, it reconnected automatically – and stayed connecting, even after shutting off the phone's Personal Hotspot setting.

This could be a faulty setting on the carrier side (the editor experienced it using Verizon service), or it may only occur in older iOS devices. The editor was able to fix this issue by following instructions that solved the 'missing hotspot' issue present in an earlier iOS 12 beta: go to General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This should prevent your computer from automatically connecting to your iOS device's hotspot, though there might be other fixes out there for this issue.

Device won't update to iOS 12

Ah yes, the biggest issue of all: if your device fails when trying to update to iOS 12. Several conditions might prevent this from happening, like not having enough space for the install or using an unsupported device (those released in or more recently than 2013, like the iPhone 5S and iPad Air/Mini 2).

If you're confident that your iPhone and iPad should get the new-ish iOS 12 update, try working through Apple's support suggestion page to narrow down the cause. If none of those suggestions work, you might try this more involved method Apple recommends: connect your device to a computer, open iTunes, and hold down the buttons to force-restart your device until the iTunes logo appears. When the prompt appears on your computer, click 'Update.'

Our Verdict:

Yes, the iPhone XS is the best phone Apple's ever created, but that's not really a surprise - it's the new one. The bigger question is: what's actually changed, given the design is so similar to last year? Well, the speakers are more powerful and 'wider' in sound, the camera has been enhanced with Smart HDR, the battery management is better and the chipset is far more powerful inside. These are all just tweaks though, and it's smart from Apple to remove the iPhone X from sale, as that would be a far more attractive option this year.

New iPhones for 2018 are out – which is the best for you?

New iPhones for 2018 are out – which is the best for you?

There's been a big change to our best iPhone 2018 list thanks to Apple introducing three new iPhones in September: iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR.

It makes your choice much more complicated – buying the newest may not be your best option; the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are still great choices, and you'll find the iPhone X on sale in certain places for a cheap price (but not at the Apple Store).

Good news, all of the phones we're recommending run iOS 12, Apple's latest update for its devices. It's therefore a bit different from our prestigious best phones list and the best Android phones list. Apple's prices vary wildly, all of them are an investment.

Our top iPhone list highlights the different specs, screen sizes, and price points. Each of these handsets has something to offer every type of Apple fan – so we've boiled down the choices for you in a simple-to-read format.

1. iPhone XS Max
The biggest (and best) iPhone yet

Weight: 208g | Dimensions: 157.5 x 77.4 x 7.7mm | OS: iOS 12 | Screen size: 6.5-inch | Resolution: 1242 x 2688 | CPU: A12 Bionic | RAM: 4GB | Storage: 64/256/512GB | Battery: 3,179mAh | Rear camera: 12MP+12MP | Front camera: 7MP

+Great big screen for games and movies
+Camera is strong for an iPhone
-Price: most expensive iPhone ever
-Size can make it tricky to handle

The iPhone XS Max is Apple's biggest and best iPhone – if you're hands and wallets and large enough. It has an expansive 6.5-inch OLED screen with HDR10 support to make colors pop. It's the perfect phone if you want a giant screen.
Behind that huge screen is an improved dual-lens 12MP camera. Apple outfitted it with Smart HDR and increased the sensor size to capture larger pixels. Don't let that static 12MP number fool you. The iPhone XS Max (like the XS) has new depth-sensing capabilities for adjustable bokeh (background blur) during and after a shot.
The TrueDepth camera returns with faster Face ID recognition, and your 7MP selfies get better depth control and Smart HDR, too. And, of course, Animoji returns with the iOS 12 benefit of having Memoji now.
The iPhone XS Max is more expensive than the iPhone X and iPhone XS that replaces the X, of course. But if you're paying for it over the course of two years in a contract (or through the Apple Upgrade Program), it's not that much more month-to-month.

2. iPhone XS
The iPhone you've been waiting for

Weight: 174g | Dimensions: 143.6 x 70.9 x 7.7mm | OS: iOS 12 | Screen size: 5.8-inch | Resolution: 1125 x 2436 | CPU: A12 Bionic | RAM: 4GB | Storage: 64/256/512GB | Battery: 2,659mAh | Rear camera: 12MP+12MP | Front camera: 7MP

+Smart HDR helps the camera
+Faster operation in one hand vs Max
-Battery life not world-beating
-Still very expensive

Believe it or not, the iPhone XS is Apple's best 'small' phone. It has a 5.8-inch screen, so it's more one-hand-friendly than the Max, but still a sizable upgrade for some people.
It's an upgrade over last year's iPhone X, our previous best iPhone recommendation, though you'll have to look more closely for the changes – the design isn't different at all. It has a Smart HDR-capable 12MP camera, enhanced TrueDepth front-facing camera, and a fast A12 Bionic chipset, exactly like the larger iPhone XS Max.
In fact, this all-screen phone is pretty much the iPhone XS Max in last year's smaller form factor. It does have a smaller battery than the Max and obviously a smaller screen, but you will still capture the same great photos and videos on this device and play the same games. There's no different there.

3. iPhone X
The iPhone you've been waiting for

Weight: 174g | Dimensions: 143.6 x 70.9 x 7.7mm | OS: iOS 11 | Screen size: 5.8-inch | Resolution: 1125 x 2436 | CPU: A11 Bionic | RAM: 3GB | Storage: 64/256GB | Battery: 2,716mAh | Rear camera: 12MP+12MP | Front camera: 7MP

+Brilliant screen
+Powerful innards
-Smart TrueDepth camera
-Incredibly expensive

The iPhone X is as impressive as it is expensive, but if you really want the best iPhone today and don't want to wait for the iPhone XI, this is the one to get today. Millions of Apple fans already have since it launched almost seven months ago. It's the future of Apple's smartphone.
It has a large all-screen display, except for a notch cutout at the top that houses a new TrueDepth Camera. This takes selfies to another level and can also map your face to an iPhone X-exclusive Animoji. If you don't know what that is by now you probably won't care.
The iPhone X is Apple's 10th anniversary smartphone and has just about everything iPhone users have been asking for, from a more forward-leaning design to faster specs and new features. You'll just have to get used to Face ID instead of reaching for that non-existent fingerprint sensor.

4. iPhone 8 Plus
The best 'normal' iPhone available right now

Weight: 202g | Dimensions: 158.4 x 78.1 x 7.5mm | OS: iOS 11 | Screen size: 5.5-inch | Resolution: 1080 x 1920 | CPU: A11 Bionic | RAM: 3GB | Storage: 64/256GB | Battery: 2,691mAh | Rear camera: 12MP+12MP | Front camera: 7MP

+Wireless charging
+Longer battery life
-Dated design
-Expensive

The iPhone 8 Plus is the best iPhone if you're not willing to take the plunge into Apple's proposed smartphone future and need that Touch ID fingerprint sensor. It remains popular due to its screen size, cheaper price and physical home button.
It does have several key features you'll like, however. It's among the first iPhones to have both wireless charging and fast charging, and the camera has improved. Its dual-lens camera doesn't have OIS in the telephoto lens (a feature saved for the X), but it's still a great way to snap a photo at long distances.
It won't turn nearly as many heads with its bezel-heavy design, but the iPhone 8 Plus is the iPhone built for big hands and slightly smaller wallets than the new iPhone X.

5. iPhone 8
The newest 4.7-inch iPhone is a phone lots of people still want

Weight: 148g | Dimensions: 138.4 x 67.3 x 7.3mm | OS: iOS 11 | Screen size: 4.7-inch | Resolution: 750 x 1334 | CPU: A11 Bionic | RAM: 2GB | Storage: 64/256GB | Battery: 1,821mAh | Rear camera: 12MP | Front camera: 7MP

+Wireless charging is useful
+Camera is great at point-and-shoot
-Limited upgrade over iPhone 7
-Bezel-heavy design looks dated

This is actually the best-selling iPhone from Apple, and for several good reasons. First, we get it, you refuse to budge from the 4.7-inch iPhone screen size and, frankly, we don't blame you. Every time we go back to this iPhone with 'normal' dimensions, we feel like we just went on a smartphone vacation. Second, its price is way more reasonable for a lot a folks than the iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus.
Just because the size is the same as iPhones of old, doesn't mean the technology behind it is, though. The iPhone 8 features the same A11 Bionic chipset as the iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X, and it too debuted wireless charging and fast charging on an Apple smartphone.
The camera is still fantastic, even if it doesn't have the dual-lens capabilities that are exclusive to the X and Plus, and you'll dig iOS 11 at this size more so than the even smaller iPhone SE.
