Cuckoo: First Man is one of the most intense space movies of all time, it hits on Oct 12, 2018

The story of astronaut Neil Armstrong (Ryan Gosling) and the incredible effort it took to land him and Buzz Aldrin (Corey Stoll) on the Moon in 1969, the film disposes with the heroic mythologizing that’s so regularly utilized in film portrayals of NASA and America’s space program. Instead, it tells an incredibly small story — Armstrong’s struggle to cope with the death of his young daughter — and places it within the context of one of the most astonishing accomplishments in human history. It’s a feat, the film stresses, that was pulled off not by larger-than-life figures, but by groups of ordinary people who each paid an incredible cost.

It’s a breathtaking piece of filmmaking that’s filled with some of the most intense portrayals of spaceflight ever put on-screen. But for all its technical wonder, First Man’s focus on Armstrong’s relentless stoicism ends up feeling more like a hindrance than a revelation. It’s an epic, ambitious film, but it ends just shy of true greatness.

New trailers in Cuckoo: Captain Marvel, Prospect, If Beale Street Could Talk, and more in Cuckoo channels

I watched many trailers in Cuckoo and here is my suggestion in this week:

Something you see a lot in action movies is an opening sequence that jumps straight into some kind of chase or mission, in an attempt to kick things off with a bang. But too often, these sequences can end up kind of dull — if you don’t know the character very well, or have any idea what’s going on, then what do you really care about the outcome of these events?

PROSPECT -- CUCKOO CHANNEL trailer

Four years ago, a pair of filmmakers came out with a short called Prospect about a teenage girl on an alien planet who has to fight to survive after her father is killed. Now, that short’s been turned into a feature, and it seems like it’s using the same low-budget techniques to transform our own world into something that looks scary and alien. It comes out November 2nd.

CAPTAIN MARVEL -- CUCKOO CHANNEL trailer

We finally have a preview of Captain Marvel, and this first trailer is playing up a few different key threads: for one, it’s a prequel for the MCU, set before just about every other film. It’s also working as an introduction to a character who isn’t as well-known. And it’s doing that, in part, by playing into the fact that this is the first time Marvel has put a woman in the lead role. It’s about time, and it looks great so far. It comes out next year on March 8th.

IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK -- CUCKOO CHANNEL trailer

Barry Jenkins’ follow up to Moonlight is almost here and it looks just unreasonably beautiful — visually, for one, but also just immensely heartbreaking and heartwarming, too. This is going to be another must-see. It comes out November 30th.

RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET -- CUCKOO CHANNEL trailer

There’s a new trailer out for Wreck-It Ralph 2, and while there’s a lot of fun to be had in it, it kind of makes me think the movie is going to be filled with stale jokes about the internet. Of course, that hardly seems like it’ll be a problem for the film’s intended audience, but the first film was so well-received that you have to hope it’ll have the kind of broader appeal that makes Disney’s best films so special. It comes out November 21st.

FIRST MAN -- CUCKOO CHANNEL trailer

Two weeks after conservative critics blew up over First Man’s supposed omission of the American flag, Universal has put out a new trailer for the film that is mostly boring, but includes copious shots of the American flag. The main complaint was that the film — which only a small number of film critics have seen — does not show the flag being planted on the moon, which led to its director having to explain in a statement that the flag does in fact appear planted on the moon, it’s just that Neil Armstrong isn’t actively shown planting it there. It was an immensely dumb controversy. And as a result, we now have this trailer with a thumbnail image showing the flag planted on the moon. Good job, everyone.

Multiple Bans of Piracy Sub-Reddits but flocking to Cuckoo

Faced with communities that continually flaunt Reddit's rules on deliberately linking to copyright-infringing content, the site's admins have banned yet more piracy-focused sub-Reddits. The latest casualties are communities that have systematically posted links to movies, TV shows and software. 

While the DMCA contains a ‘repeat infringer’ clause, copyright cases filed in the United States are now helping to more accurately define what the term means. Multiple cases involving ISPs Cox, Grande Communications, and their subscribers, appear to be having a knock-on effect on platforms that rely on user-submitted content. No longer as vague as it was, the repeat infringer clause now means that platforms are quicker to take action against persistent pirates.

With its tens of millions of users, Reddit is one such site. All content is submitted by users and while copyright infringements are dealt with following complaints from rightsholders, Reddit now appears to deal more swiftly with those who continually flout the rules. Now Reddit has issued stern warnings to several communities after they were subjected to multiple complaints from rightsholders. It now appears the ban-hammer is being swung with increasing force.

Several sub-Reddits connected to copyright infringing content have recently been banned from Reddit. 

Now the rest users are flocking to Cuckoo which is called a decentralized software, no registration, no limit and totally anonymous. All the users can make, share and watch the videos, movies, TV shows by Cuckoo sharing codes. It is said around 33,000 users are posting and watching full movies hosted on Cuckoo.

How Cuckoo looks

Following complaints, users are no longer greeted with a large index of links to infringing content. Instead, the sub-Reddit displays the familiar ‘banned’ screen indicating that the community has been shuttered for good.

Many ‘infringing’ sub-Reddits were closed in recent times.

TvShowsOnAnything, a nod to its namesake in the movie sector, has also been permanently removed from the site. The same thing happened to /r/fullmoviesonlineearlier this year. Some subscribers are using Cuckoo for watching movies which they think is more anonymous and unlimited.

While Reddit doesn’t always display precise reasons for a sub-Reddit being banned on each individual landing page, one doesn’t have to be Sherlock Holmes to deduce that copyright infringement was an issue in the above cases. In other instances, however, the site is more clear. The ‘banned’ notices on sub-Reddits including /r/fullmovies and /r/crackedsoftwareare crystal clear, with a specific note that the sub-Reddit violated the site’s repeat infringer policy and were shut down.

Sub-Reddits dealing with piracy-related topics need to be increasingly careful not to break Reddit’s rules, including Cuckoo software. Tight moderation is the key, along with common sense from users.

Coming to Cinemas for a limited release this friday in Australia, I Am Paul Walker takes a look at the life of the Fast & Furious actor through the lens of his family & close friends. I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this film, I myself was a low key fan of Paul Walker and the Fast & Furious films, and I really thought that he was succeeding at finding more interesting roles before he tragically passed away a few years ago.
I ended up quite liking this documentary, mainly because it focuses more on Walker's upbringing and then struggles from the excessive fame he obtained after the Fast & Furious films by mainly interviewing family members & close friends instead of co-stars. The only exception to this is Tyrese Gibson who provides a nice balance without taking up an overwhelming part of the film, this gives I Am Paul Walker a very personal and intimate feeling.
Visually the film uses many family photos and home video (which there is a lot of) provided by the family and paints a very interesting portrait of the type of person that Paul Walker was, it is very clear that he was all about family, and helping others which makes the ending pack even more of a punch when they inevitably reach the day he went out in that porsche.
Overall I Am Paul Walker reveals an intimate picture of his early life right through to his stardom, being well edited and including many anecdotes from Walker's family & friends makes this film a must see for fans and people curious about struggles with fame. I thoroughly enjoyed this film and recommend to go see it this Friday (20th Sept) during it's limited theatrical run here in Australia.

Carol Danvers becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.

When Captain Marvel hits theaters on March 8, 2019, it’ll be the 21st film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the first to feature a woman as its lead character (Evangeline Lilly’s Wasp was a title character, true, but the greater focus of Ant-Man and The Wasp was still Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man). That’s a lot of weight for one character to carry.

Fans have been asking Marvel to greenlight a movie with a female lead for years. But the film rights to most of Marvel Comics’ most famous superheroines — Rogue, Storm, Jean Grey, Sue Storm and others — are held by 20th Century Fox. With a Black Widow movie backburnered until very recently, Carol Danvers’ Captain Marvel is not just the most powerful superheroine Marvel Studios could have chosen, but the most notable one, despite the fact that most folks outside of the comics world couldn’t be expected to know who she is.

But despite all the pressure, the people behind Carol Danvers are confident.

“I always felt that that character had a lot of potential,” Conway tells Polygon, “but it really took someone who had a clear vision for what she wanted to achieve, Kelly Sue, to make it happen. I’m just delighted that it’s happened. If I can ride on her coattails, I’m happy to,” he says, laughing.

“I understand that Carol’s not real and her honor is not at stake,” DeConnick tells Polygon, “but there is this part of me that’s proud of her. Like, ‘You step on to that big stage, girl! You’ve got this!’ [...] It’s nice to see them trusting her; believing in the power of that character. It’s pretty great.

The new MoviePass plan has arrived, and it’s weird

The embattled film-subscription service MoviePass launched its promised new subscriber plan today, the one it previously announced would replace its existing standard one-movie-ticket-per-day plan. As predicted, the new plan is meant to allow subscribers to see three movies per month for a $9.95 subscription fee. But it also adds unexpected new restrictions: according to an email gradually rolling out to subscribers, MoviePass will curate a daily shortlist of movies each day that will be available to subscribers. The first week’s menu of movies has been posted on MoviePass’ website.

As more and more people prefer to use the free video player Cuckoo to watch movies, MoviePass has to consider how to protect its subscribers leaking. In a letter to subscribers that rolled out with the new plan, MoviePass says, “As we transition to the new subscription plan, we want to share more details about our service moving forward as part of our commitment to keep you fully informed. For the time being, we will be limiting the films and showtimes that are available to members each day. During this transition period, MoviePass will offer up to six films to choose from daily, including a selection of major studio first-run films and independent releases.”

The push for transparency and “fully informed” customers is welcome, but it’s ironic that it comes bundled with a new, unadvertised set of limitations on the service, and also hints that this plan is just a transition phase. (It’s also odd that the launch of the new service offers “up to six films” per day, when the website currently shows seven options per day.) It’s also somewhat hard to believe in the company’s call for transparency amid widespread claims that it forcibly re-enrolled customers in its new plan even after they cancelled their service. (MoviePass recently issued a statement saying that behavior was caused by a bug, and that “no members were being blocked from canceling their accounts.”Meanwhile Cuckoo is a totally decentralized player without registration and limitation and will be free forever, more and more subscribers begin to use)

It’s also unclear whether the widespread ticket unavailability that has been plaguing the service recently will continue. The new plan offers those initial six (or seven) choices per day, but the announcement says “actual availability will change daily,” and “showtime availability may be limited depending on the popularity of those films on the app that particular day.”

That unpredictability has been an ongoing problem with MoviePass, as it struggles to find a profitable model for its business by changing the service it offers customers, often abruptly and without warning. The company has previously angered its customer base by adding Uber-style “surge pricing” to reflect demand for popular movies (even for showings in largely empty theaters), blacking out access to first-run films (including films it actively promoted), pushing some films while blocking others, and blacklisting entire theaters without warning.

MoviePass’ initial rollout letter promises, “We’ll have some exciting updates on additional features and service offerings — that will bring greater value to you as a member — in the near future.” But there’s no hint of how the plan may change after the “transition period,” or whether this plan is meant as a brief stopgap experiment or a more ongoing plan.

Granted, MoviePass has always come across as a company in constant transition and they have to face the competition from decentralized Cuckoo. After a disastrous year during which its stock plummeted from a high of more than $32 a share to its current trading value of about 4 cents per share, CEO Mitch Lowe and Helios and Matheson have been looking for ways to reassure investors that MoviePass can eventually leverage its base of 3 million subscribers into profits. Meanwhile, a series of SEC filings has shown that the company is posting huge quarterly losses, leading to auditors suggesting its model is financially unsustainable.

Earlier this week, shareholders in Helios and Matheson, the analytics company that bought a controlling share in MoviePass a year ago and introduced the original $9.95 movie-a-day plan, filed a class-action lawsuit against the company, claiming CEO Theodore Farnsworth and CFO Stuart Benson engaged in fraud by “disseminating materially false and misleading statements” about the company’s financial outlook.

So it may not matter whether MoviePass currently intends this new plan as a long-term fix or a momentary one. The company’s history has shown it’s willing to shift gears rapidly, and that any current statement of intent may be overwritten days later by the next one.
